Sales of Canadian Olympic Replica Gear Double Since Start of Games

TORONTO, Aug. 19 /CNW/ - Canadians are showing their support for Team
Canada athletes in Beijing by purchasing Olympic replica wear. Hudson's Bay
Company (Hbc) today announced that sales of its Olympic merchandise have
doubled since the start of the Beijing 2008 Games on August 8.
"We typically see sales of Olympic product take off once the Games
begin," said Donna Dimitropoulos, Merchandise Vice President, Hbc Olympics.
"It's hard not to get caught up in the excitement of the Games, and the
easiest way for most of us to express our pride in our athletes, is to wear
the Team Canada Olympic gear."
In Canada, the top selling items include a variety of t-shirts: a short
sleeve Canada t-shirt available in five colours, the Chinese script t-shirt,
the Banner t-shirt with a Chinese tattoo-inspired print, and the Elements
t-shirt. Rounding out the best sellers include the popover fleece 'Canada'
hoody, the multifunctional B-Tube and the stylish tapestry hoody.
Hbc's Olympic design team worked with Canadian Olympic athletes from
across the country to design the collection. The collection meets fashion and
functional needs with clothing that incorporates performance fabrics that
provide UV protection, four way stretch, odor resistance, and wicking and
cooling properties for ultimate comfort in Beijing's climate. The clothing is
also eco-friendly, using materials such as bamboo, cotton blends, cacona and
organic cotton.
"I love the new uniforms, not only because we stand out from any other
country but because they are very different from other Canadian uniforms we
have had before," said weightlifter Marilou Dozois-Provost. "I found them very
comfortable, breathable, practical and environmentally friendly. I love how we
look stylish in them."
Canada's Olympic team members in Beijing each received 25 items, as part
of the 2008 team package, including leisure wear, jackets, pants and shorts,
hoodies, t-shirts, shoes and luggage. Most of the pieces will be available for
sale as replica wear both in Bay and Zellers stores, online at www.hbc.com,
and at Canada House and the BC Pavilion during the Beijing 2008 Games.
Hbc is the Official Clothing and Luggage Supplier to the Canadian Olympic
team and the Official Department Store Partner and General Merchandise
Retailer in Canada until 2012. The Hbc Foundation has also committed to
raising $20 million dollars through 2012 to help fund our athletes, their
training facilities and their national sports organizations. To date, the
Company has already raised nearly $6 million toward its goal. Funds are raised
on Canada Day at the Hbc Run for Canada in communities across the country and
an annual charity golf tournament.
