Salah Bachir to receive Lifetime Achievement Award

TORONTO, May 19 /CNW/ - The 519 is absolutely thrilled to congratulate
Salah Bachir on Pride Toronto's recent announcement that he has been chosen as
this year's recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Pride Gala on
June 24th, 2009 at the Carlu. This prestigious award honours those who,
through excellence in their work, have made an outstanding lifetime
contribution to LGBTTQ communities.
"Salah Bachir is someone who exemplifies true vision and commitment to
the community. For years he has worked tirelessly on a range of campaigns in
support of various LGBTQ causes. We simply couldn't think of a more deserving
recipient of this prestigious honour. Salah's generosity, endless hours of
work and commitment on behalf of The 519 and others is transforming lives,
influencing and improving our communities. He is an inspiration to all" says
Maura Lawless, Executive Director of The 519.
Since 2006, Salah Bachir has been the Honourary Patron of The 519 and is
currently the Chair of the Centre's ambitious Capital Campaign. He has pledged
more than $1 million to the project and with his stellar leadership, the
Centre has exceeded its fundraising goals by inspiring an impressive list of
donors including BMO Financial, CIBC, Toronto Dominion Bank, ScotiaBank, RBC,
Rogers Communications, MAC Cosmetics and Holt Renfrew, just to name a few.
In addition to engendering philanthropy in others, Salah has produced
unforgettable galas in an effort to raise funds for various charities, all
featuring high-caliber talent and big-name celebrities. Sandra Bernhard,
Eartha Kitt, Joan Rivers, and Diahann Carroll all came to Toronto at Salah's
request to headline separate events in support of The 519 Capital Campaign.
Salah is also a true fighter for our LGBTQ rights. From battling against
the notorious bathhouse raids to funding gay theatre to fighting systemic
homophobia, Salah has done it all. He has also volunteered his time on a
number of boards and committees in the community.
