Sainsbury's selects Smartcool's Energy Saving Module(TM) for chain-wide Re-Fit environmental program



    
    'Green' grocer installs ESM(TM) in 25 stores as part of industry-leading
    initiative to reduce greenhouse gas emissions
    

    VANCOUVER, April 21 /CNW/ - Smartcool Systems Inc. (TSXV: SSC), whose
Energy Saving Module (ESM)(TM) makes refrigeration and air conditioning
systems more energy and cost-efficient, has completed a 25-store ESM(TM)
installation program for Sainsbury's Supermarkets Ltd. in the United Kingdom.
The installation program consisted of three stages, an initial test store
followed by a further 7 store assessment. Upon consideration of these results,
Smartcool was commissioned to install the ESM(TM) in a further 17 stores.
    The supermarket chain's energy management team extensively tested the
ESM(TM) to ensure it meets Sainsbury's energy and cost reduction requirements
and complements Sainsbury's innovative Re-Fit Program, which is focused on
reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
    Sainsbury's, the UK's third largest supermarket chain, is an industry
leader for environmental initiatives.
    "We have enjoyed significant business and environmental gains over the
last three years with our Reset program and our extensive testing has shown
that the Smartcool ESM will be a key addition to our list of Energy Reduction

experiencing with the ESM(TM) have led to valuable cost benefits and is
helping us meet our Environmental targets"
    Before making its purchase decision, Sainsbury's completed a
comprehensive, real-world testing and analysis of the Smartcool ESM(TM).
Testing was completed at an initial "assessment" store and then at seven
additional pilot sites across the UK. Testing, which was carried out at stores
ranging in size from convenience outlets to full-sized supermarkets, revealed
extensive energy, environmental and cost savings.

    
    With the Smartcool ESM(TM), testing at the assessment site showed:
    -   a savings of 12.3-per-cent kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity for
        refrigeration units
    -   estimated electricity reduction of 150,380 kWh annually, or enough
        electricity to supply 32 homes
    -   estimated greenhouse gas reductions of 202,844 pounds annually

    Meanwhile, testing at the seven pilot sites revealed:
    -   an average reduction in total store electricity usage of 3.5 to 4.5
        per cent
    -   average 30-month payback on capital invested
    

    Based on the eight-store testing, the ESM(TM) is now considered an
approved product for Sainsbury's Reset program which led to the further
installations in 17 additional stores.

    The 3.5 per cent to 4.5 per cent reduction in total store electricity
costs provided by the Smartcool ESM(TM) represents a significant saving for
the stores using the system.
    "These savings can then be reinvested back into store operations to
improve the customer experience," said Burnes.

Sainsbury's was the first retailer to publish a comprehensive environmental
performance report.
