Safe Summer Driving Tips from Safety Scholars Canada

Students can submit videos at Safetyscholars.ca by Sept. 1

TORONTO, July 18 /CNW/ - In an effort to help Canadian students learn
about the importance of road safety, Safety Scholars Canada is putting the
call out for the best student road safety video in Canada. The
Safetyscholars.ca contest, supported by Bridgestone Firestone Canada (BFCA),
is designed to get students to explore all aspects of road safety - from the
hazards of speeding to the risks of talking on a cell phone while driving -
and produce a 25 second video. The winners will receive one of three $5,000
scholarships.
Safety Scholars Canada not only wants to see what young Canadian
directors can create but also wants to share some driving tips for Canadian
drivers of all ages.
One of the most important and easiest ways to ensure your car is road
worthy is by maintaining your tires:

    - Inflate: Check your tires regularly using a tire gauge to ensure the
proper tire pressure. Visual checks can help but can be deceiving.
There is often only a slight difference in appearance even when a
tire is under-inflated by as much as 10 PSI (pounds per square inch).
Tires can lose one PSI per month with regular driving. Your
recommended tire pressure is located on your door jamb and in the
        owner's manual.
    - Rotate your tires every 8,000 km. This will help keep wear even on
        your tires.
    - Evaluate: Place a penny in the tread of your tire. If you can see the
Queen's crown, the tread is worn and your tires should be replaced.

Some other easy to follow tips during summer road trips:

    - Take care not to overload your vehicle. Overloading can cause your
vehicle to respond differently in normal driving conditions.
    - In wet weather, plan your braking. When entering a corner slow down
        and brake gently.
    - Check your wipers and wiper fluid before any extended road trip.

With summer now in full swing, many students will be hitting the road,
some for the first time, and road safety should be part of their summer
curriculum. Car crashes claim more lives of more North American 16 to 21 year
olds than any other cause. The Safety Scholars Canada Video Contest is a great
way to get students to think about road safety and use their creative skills
to create something fun, original and educational.
The Safety Scholars Video Contest is offered by BFCA to promote driver
safety and education among Canada's youth. Participants must be 16 to 21 years
old, and legal residents of Canada. Contestants must also posses a valid
driver's license and be currently enrolled as a full-time student at an
accredited secondary, college level or trade school. Official rules with
complete entry, eligibility and prize details are available on
SafetyScholars.ca.
Canadians have until September 1 to enter their video at
