Ryerson University welcomes Ontario budget

TORONTO, March 26 /CNW/ - Ryerson University welcomes the Ontario
government's ongoing commitment to post-secondary education in the recent
provincial budget.
"The budget allows Ryerson University to make continued improvements
focused on our four key priorities: improving the quality of undergraduate
education; graduate program development; scholarship, research and creative
activity; and reputation enhancement," said President Sheldon Levy.
The budget delivers approximately $12 million in new one-time-only
funding to Ryerson University, in addition to base operating funding received
through the government's five-year Reaching Higher plan. Ryerson will use the
new $12 million in a manner consistent with one-time-only funding, the
allocation within the University to be determined through the regular budget
planning process. The Ryerson University 2007-08 budget will go forward to the
Board of Governors for approval this spring.
In addition, Ryerson looks forward to working with the Ontario government
on the implementation plan for new post-secondary funding announced in the
March 19 federal budget, once conditions for the new funding have been
determined.
Ryerson is pleased that the budget introduces an amendment to the Ryerson
University Act, which ensures an institution with modern and effective
governance in line with other major Ontario universities. The amendments
include: an increase in the number of terms for appointees to the Board;
elimination of the requirement for Canadian citizenship and permanent
residency as a pre-requisite for membership on the Board; changing the name of
Academic Council to Senate; and expanding the seats on Senate from 50 to 51,
in order to include a seat for a librarian.
