TORONTO, June 24 /CNW/ - Greg Wheeler of Russell will receive a Fire
Safety Advocate Award from the Fire Marshal of Ontario at a ceremony on
June 25, 2008 in Toronto. The annual Fire Safety Awards recognize outstanding
contributions to fire protection and prevention in Ontario.
Greg, a graphic artist, was approached by the Russell Fire Department to
provide input on the artwork for their fire safety trailer. Delighted by the
opportunity to assist his local fire service, he agreed to personally create
the artwork. After a number of months without any remuneration, Greg produced
a colourful, eye-catching design that effectively captures the public's
attention, especially children.
Greg has also contributed his artistic abilities on other projects for
the Russell Fire Department including the design of a Fire Safety Checklist
program and a store display board that is used in local hardware stores to
promote fire safety products and messages.
"Greg's volunteer efforts on this project demonstrates that there are
many different ways that people can contribute to fire safety education in
their communities," said Fire Marshal Patrick Burke. "Greg's artwork for the
fire safety trailer has helped to increase the awareness level about fire
safety in Russell and surrounding areas."
Fire departments throughout the province nominated individuals and
organizations for this year's awards; 17 recipients were selected. The
Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services Rick Bartolucci and
Fire Marshal Burke will present the awards at a luncheon ceremony at the
Sutton Place Hotel in Toronto.
