RuggedCom Introduces the IEEE 1588 v2 Precision Timing Protocol on
RuggedSwitch(R) and RuggedServer(TM) Products

WOODBRIDGE, ON, Oct. 13 /CNW/ - RuggedCom Inc. ("RuggedCom") (TSX:RCM), a leading provider of rugged communications networking solutions designed for mission-critical applications in harsh environments, has introduced the RuggedSwitch(R) RSG2288 a new IEEE 1588 v2 enabled 9-Port Gigabit Ethernet switch, and the RuggedServer(TM) RS416 Serial Server now enabled with IEEE 1588 v2 on its integrated 4-Port Ethernet Switch. Both products are designed to operate in harsh environments of utility substations and provide highly accurate time synchronization for protection and control applications. These RuggedCom products can withstand high levels of electromagnetic interference, radio frequency interference and a wide temperature range of -40 degrees C to +85 degrees C. Both are designed to meet the challenging communication networking and environmental demands found in utility substation and deliver stable and accurate synchronization for timing applications.

The new RuggedSwitch(R) RSG2288 gigabit Ethernet switch, coupled with sub 1 micros time stamping accuracy is the optimal solution for implementing time critical control networks such as IEC 68150 Process Bus. Designed to simultaneously handle the continuous heavy offload of data from the substation's intelligent electronic devices (IEDs), while providing accurate hardware assisted time stamping, the RSG2288 is in a class of its own. Able to perform IEEE 1558 v2 Master, Slave and Transparent Clock functionality, the RSG2288 provides the flexibility for network designers to create a combined communication and timing network. With the optional GPS timing source card, the RSG2288 becomes the network's IEEE 1588 Grand Master, supplying time synchronization for the substation and eliminating the need to connect with time sources through a wide area network. The cyber security and networking features make it ideally suited for creating secure Ethernet networks for mission critical, real-time, control applications.

The RuggedServer(TM) RS416 was designed to allow the migration from more expensive and less accurate timing methods to the new standards without having to replace all non-1588 IEDs. The RS416 provides a means to synchronize non-1588 devices with emerging IEEE 1588 networks through a unique functionality that has an IEEE 1588 Slave clock on input and an IRIG-B timing signal output. This allows older IRIG-B devices to be in sync with the same master clock as newer IEEE 1588 IEDs, through either serial connection or dedicated IRIG-B cabling.

"Providing customers with the latest time synchronization technology while not forcing them to abandon their existing devices, was key to the design of these products," explains Rene Midence, RuggedCom Vice President, Marketing. "With the RSG2288 and RS416, customers can choose to implement a full IEC 61850 Process Bus with IEEE 1588 v2 right away or gradually move in that direction as they need to replace older equipment."

The new IEEE 1588 v2 product line features the following:

    - RSG2288 9-Port Managed Gigabit Ethernet Switch
    - RS416 16-Port Serial Server with integrated 4-Port Managed Ethernet
        Switch
    - Sub 1us timing accuracy
    - GPS card for IEEE 1588 v2 Grand Master capability
    - Master, Slave and Transparent Clock functionality
    - Meets or exceeds IEC 61850-3 and IEEE 1613 Standards
    - Wide variety of interfaces: Ethernet copper and fiber and serial
