BURLINGTON, ON, Jan. 22 /CNW/ - Royal Botanical Gardens (RBG) is holding
the third annual Glass under Glass exhibit from Friday, January 23 to March
29, 2009 in the Mediterranean Garden at RBG Centre (680 Plains Rd. W.,
Glass: it's a simple thing, really: Super-heated sand compressed into a
shape. However, the glass on display at Royal Botanical Gardens is anything
but simple. Twenty-two local glass artists, plus several up-and-coming
students from the Sheridan School of Craft and Design, are showing off their
best works in the Mediterranean Garden greenhouse at Royal Botanical Gardens.
The show, dubbed Glass under Glass (get it?) consists of more than 100
pieces on display, ranging from traditional leaded-glass designs to a piece
that looks like an odd combination of a jelly fish sliced to Gene Simmons'
As snow piled up outside, crews loaded the whimsical glass art into the
tropical greenhouse. "Given the weather," quipped RBG executive director Mark
Runciman, "I can't think of a better way to spend a couple hours. The Med
House is warm and summery, the plants in there are in bloom and the glass is
spectacular. This is like a mini Mediterranean vacation, without the hassle of
flights and hotels."
All of the glass-work on display is for sale, making this a great
opportunity to start or supplement a glass collection, or at least pick up
something that really, really looks like Gene Simmons' tongue.
The combination of unique glass art, unexpected Mediterranean vegetation
and several strategically placed benches, an afternoon at Glass under Glass
may be just the thing to fight off the winter blues.
Royal Botanical Gardens is a living museum, which serves local, regional
and global communities while developing and promoting public understanding of
the relationship between the plant world, humanity and the rest of nature.
