Rogers Wireless network launches in Prince Rupert

World-standard GSM technology comes to Northern B.C. city

PRINCE RUPERT, BC, March 12 /CNW/ - Rogers Wireless today announced the
launch of advanced wireless services offered over its world-standard GSM
(Global System for Mobile communication) network in Prince Rupert. Residents
of Northern B.C. as well as Canadian and international visitors will now be
able to take advantage of a GSM network for the first time in this market.
"I appreciate Rogers' support of our efforts to invest in the future of
Northern B.C. with its multi-million dollar network expansion which will bring
wireless service to Prince Rupert and other towns in the area," said Premier
Gordon Campbell.
"Our $10 million investment recognizes the importance of world-class
communications in an area of growing economic significance in British
Columbia," said Gordon Nelson, Vice President and General Manager, Rogers
Communications, British Columbia. "As Canada's only GSM provider, we are
pleased to offer leading-edge wireless devices on Canada's most reliable
network."
Rogers Wireless GSM network coverage is now available in Prince Rupert
and Terrace, with expansion to Prince Rupert's airport slated for May 2008. By
summer, the network will be completed all along Highway 16, from Prince Rupert
through to Prince George.
Residents and local companies now have a choice in wireless providers and
can access the latest Rogers devices. These include BlackBerry and Windows
Mobile products for businesses that need email and desktop functions when they
are away from the office. Other devices enable users to take and share photos,
download music from Rogers MusicStore to an integrated MP3 player or stay in
touch via social networking sites such as Facebook.
The GSM standard accounts for 80 per cent of the world's mobile market
and more than two billion customers around the globe. Rogers offers roaming in
more than 200 countries worldwide so customers can be reached at their own
Prince Rupert phone number as they travel around the world. International
visitors to Prince Rupert, particularly notable during the cruise ship season,
will also now be able to use their GSM devices and services in the area.
Rogers' investment further recognizes the future completion of a major port in
Prince Rupert, facilitating a key shipping hub and international business
region within the next five to ten years.
In addition to voice and data services, businesses along the corridor and
across B.C. will soon be able to take advantage of fleet management systems,
such as the Rogers mFleet tracking solution, which enables a company to
wirelessly monitor a fleet of vehicles and ensure the safety of drivers and
personnel operating in remote locations.
Rogers Wireless service is available in Prince Rupert through its
authorized Rogers Dealer at 219 Third Avenue West.
