MONTREAL, Feb. 5 /CNW Telbec/ - Rio Tinto Alcan will become lead sponsor
of the Grand défi Pierre Lavoie for the next three years and support its
health and fitness activities throughout Quebec via the Rio Tinto Alcan Canada
"We are proud to be involved with this unique community-building
programme and its goal to encourage healthy lifestyles for children and
families, especially because Pierre Lavoie is a Rio Tinto Alcan employee,"
said Jacynthe Côté, Chief executive, Rio Tinto Alcan. "Pierre has shown
remarkable passion and great achievement through his work with, among others,
l'Association de l'acidose lactique and the Corporation de recherche et
d'action sur les maladies héréditaires. We look forward to building on this
success together in the coming years."
As lead sponsor, Rio Tinto Alcan will support all upcoming Grand défi
activities, including La Tournée le Lait and a contest in May 2009 centred on
encouraging daily exercise among elementary students across the province.
Closing celebrations will be held at the Olympic Stadium in Montreal on 14 and
15 June, with students from winning schools in attendance.
The Grand défi also includes Pierre Lavoie's 1000 kilometre cycling
event, in which he will lead 100 teams of cyclists from
Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean to Montreal in 40 hours between 12 and 14 June.
"I am thrilled that Rio Tinto Alcan has become our main partner in this
initiative, supported by both the public and private sectors," said Pierre
Lavoie. "What began as a successful community fundraising event has now grown
into a way for young people across Quebec to be healthier and more active in
their daily lives - hence our new title of Grand défi!"
The Rio Tinto Alcan Canada Fund, created in 2008, supports projects and
organisations that contribute toward the quality of life of host communities,
including health and safety initiatives such as the Grand défi Pierre Lavoie.
Its commitments in Quebec also include Hôpital Rivière-des-Prairies, the
Cancer Research Society, the Montreal Heart Institute and the Montreal
Neurological Institute and Hospital.
