Rio Tinto Alcan champions healthcare through a $10 million donation to the Centre hospitalier de l'Université de Montréal and McGill University Health Centre foundations

MONTREAL, June 8, 2011 /CNW Telbec/ - Rio Tinto Alcan will donate $10 million to the Centre hospitalier de l'Université de Montréal (CHUM) and McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) towards their Joint Corporate Campaign in support of the construction of their new hospitals.

"We are deeply committed to ensuring the health and well being of our communities," said Jacynthe Côté, chief executive, Rio Tinto Alcan. "The CHUM and MUHC hospitals are an integral part of Montreal and deliver outstanding health care to the people of this city and the province. We are proud to support their future endeavours, which will create sustainable benefit across generations."

"We appreciate the exceptional generosity of Rio Tinto Alcan and their great contribution toward sustaining the excellent care provided to patients through advances in teaching and research," expressed Ékram Antoine Rabbat, President and CEO, Fondation du CHUM. "This donation is exemplary. It supports the construction project for the new CHUM - a social project and a team project, whose primary beneficiaries are the patients. We are deeply appreciative of the commitment made today to the health of the people of Quebec."

"The business world sets an example for the community," said John Rae, Chairman of the McGill University Health Centre's The Best Care for Life campaign. "By lending credibility to our project, its reality is confirmed."

Marc A. Courtois, Chairman of The Best Care for Children campaign, said, "On behalf of the young patients of the Montreal Children's Hospital, I would like to thank Rio Tinto Alcan for this precious gift."

Of Rio Tinto Alcan's $10 million donation, $5 million will go to the MUHC, including $2.5 million to the Montreal Children's Hospital Foundation, and the remaining $5 million will go to the CHUM. In recognition of this important donation, the MUHC will name the garden at the hospital's new cancer centre after Rio Tinto Alcan. The Rio Tinto Alcan Therapeutic Garden will provide a quiet, tranquil area for the benefit of cancer patients and their families who use the centre.
