Retail closings fall on July 2 for Canada Day



    TORONTO, June 26 /CNW/ - This year, Toronto retail operators can keep
their doors open on Sunday, July 1 on Canada Day, but will be required to
close on Monday, July 2 in accordance with the federal Holidays Retail Act.
    When July 1 is a Sunday, the Act requires that Canada Day store closures
be observed the following day. For the purposes of the Act, this year holiday
shopping regulations will apply on Monday July 2, and retail operators can
only be open on that day if they are exempt under the City of Toronto
Municipal Code Chapter 510, Holiday Shopping.
    Toronto retail operators that are permitted to operate on Monday, July 2,
include:

    
    -   Small stores selling food, tobacco, antiques, handicrafts, fresh
        fruit and vegetables, books, magazines and newspapers
    -   Small pharmacies and art galleries
    -   Gas stations, nurseries, bars and restaurants, laundromats, and
        certain businesses catering to recreational activities.

    Toronto retail operators are also permitted to operate on Monday, July 2
if they are located in:

    -   the Downtown Yonge Business Improvement Area
    -   the Bloor-Yorkville Business Improvement Area
    -   Queens Quay West
    -   the Distillery Historic District.
