RIVIERE-DU-LOUP, QC, Feb. 16 /CNW Telbec/ - The Honourable Denis Lebel,
Minister of State for Canada Economic Development, today announced that the
Réseau d'observation des mammifères marins (ROMM), a marine mammal observation
network, has been awarded $174,375 in non-repayable funding under the
Community Economic Diversification Initiative to develop two marine life
exhibition areas at the Station exploratoire du Saint-Laurent.
ROMM, whose primary mission is to protect the marine mammal species of
the St. Lawrence and preserve their habitats, manages the Station exploratoire
du Saint-Laurent, an interpretation centre on marine and coastline
biodiversity. ROMM's project is to introduce visitors to the rich underwater
world through interactive exhibits and activities that promise to stimulate
the senses. These activities will be grouped under two themes: Le
Saint-Laurent à Vol d'oiseau and La face cachée du Saint-Laurent.
"The Station exploratoire du Saint-Laurent clearly brings positive
benefits to the region, the proof being the five new jobs that have been
created since it opened its doors in 2008. The Bas-Saint-Laurent region is
banking on this new attraction to expand its tourism offering and increase its
drawing power. A project such as this one, with all the potential it offers to
stimulate the regional economy, was quick to receive the support of Canada
Economic Development," explained the Minister of State.
This funding from Canada Economic Development will be used to build the
exhibition areas, acquire multimedia equipment, design signage and information
panels and develop promotional and educational tools.
