OTTAWA, Sept. 17 /CNW Telbec/ - The independent Parliamentary Budget
Officer, Kevin Page, today issued the following statement regarding the report
on the estimated costs of Canada's mission in Afghanistan:
"The Parliamentary Budget Officer is a newly created independent position
mandated to provide independent analysis to Parliamentarians and
Canadians about the state of the nation's finances, the government's
planned expenditures, and trends in the national economy.
In June 2008, the Office of the Parliamentary Budget Officer was asked by
the Member of Parliament for Ottawa-Centre to examine the costs of
Canada's mission in Afghanistan, including defence costs, development
assistance costs, and the costs associated with veterans' programs.
The independent report outlining the estimated financial costs of
Canada's mission in Afghanistan is expected to be completed and released
in the coming weeks. The detailed, peer-reviewed methodology used to
undertake the analysis will also be released.
The independent Office of the Parliamentary Budget Officer is finalizing
its analysis related to the costs of veterans programs, after which the
complete report will be submitted for peer review to its international
As all parties have granted their consent, as soon as the report has been
completed - including the completion of the independent peer review
process - it can be released during the writ period.
Prior to their release, major reports issued by the Office of the
Parliamentary Budget Officer will be reviewed by independent experts to
ensure that they are rigorous in their methodology and impartial in their
