OAKVILLE, ON, Jan. 22 /CNW/ - Online registration has begun for the
first-ever Mercedes-Benz Oakville 10k run scheduled for the morning of April
26, 2009. For one lucky person, crossing the finish line will actually end in
the driver's seat of a new Mercedes-Benz B-Class as one random participant
will be handed a set of keys during the post-race celebration.
The Mercedes-Benz Oakville 10k run, 10k power walk and 1k walk will start
and finish at Appleby College. The flat, fast course has been chosen to give
runners the opportunity to achieve a personal best time while they enjoy the
tree-lined streets of Oakville. However, the unique attraction to this event
is the 1-year lease of a B-Class Sports Tourer provided by Mercedes-Benz
Oakville Autohaus as a grand prize for one participant chosen through a random
race bib draw.
"In this our 50th anniversary, representing the Mercedes-Benz brand in
Oakville, we're very excited to support the established strength and
population of the Oakville running community and to provide one-lucky winner
with a unique Mercedes-Benz product experience," said Mark LeRoeye, General
Manager for Mercedes-Benz Oakville Autohaus. "We're pleased to serve the
Oakville community and now proudly operating with our flagship facility at
Dorval and QEW, we look forward to further establishing our brand into the
fabric of Oakville over the next 50 years."
"We're the only 10k race in the country that will be giving away a car to
someone who finishes the 10 kilometer course," said Race Director Mary Lynn
Futers. "Where most races will award the grand prize to the first-place
finisher, at our race, everyone who crosses the finish line has an equal
chance to win the car."
For 2009, the official charitable partner is the United Way of Oakville.
"United Way of Oakville is thrilled to be a recipient of funds raised
during the Mercedes-Benz Oakville 10k," noted Barbara Burton, CEO of the
United Way of Oakville. "In these hard economic times, corporate philanthropy
is more important than ever and Mercedes-Benz is certainly setting a stellar
example of social responsibility."
Prior to the race, each 10k participant will receive a gender-specific
race-kit that includes a technical t-shirt in a reusable bag. At the post-race
celebration, medals and prizes - including the grand prize - will be awarded
in the athletes' village. Awards will also be given to the three fastest male
and female participants in the race and power walk events.
"Online registration has begun, but we will also take race-day
registrants," said Futers. "However, the 10k run, 10k power walk and 1k walk
is limited to 1,500 participants total and registration numbers are handed out
on a first-come, first-served basis."
