TORONTO, July 25 /CNW/ - The Friends of the Greenbelt Foundation is
inviting Ontarians to celebrate the delights of local wine. Ontario Greenbelt
VQA wines are available at your neighbourhood LCBO store year-round, but until
August 16 consumers will find vibrant necktags adorning the bottles, extolling
the virtues of these rich and diverse Greenbelt wines.
It is possible to help the planet, boost the local economy and drink
great wine, all at the same time. Ontario's VQA wines are made from 100% local
grapes harvested in places like the Greenbelt. Less travel means a smaller
carbon footprint. Buying local means supporting our farmers and vintners. So
whatever the colour, they're a greener choice.
Ontario's Greenbelt is 1.8 million acres of protected countryside,
including some of the most valuable viticultural land in Canada, providing
perfect conditions for creating award-winning, world-class wines. We believe
this is something to celebrate. And it seems that consumers do too: over 90%
of central Ontarians want to buy local food and wine, according to an October
2007 poll by Environics.
"We encourage consumers to think local for all their choices - whether
it's purchasing a world-class Ontario VQA wine to sip on its own or pairing
with a meal created with local produce," said Hillary Dawson, President of the
Wine Council of Ontario. "Buying local also means supporting jobs and
generating taxes for the Greenbelt community."
People who choose 'local' are people who know that living well doesn't
have to cost the earth. They enjoy refined, sophisticated lives without
compromising their values or the environment.
"Vintners Quality Alliance (VQA) is the consumers' assurance that the
wine they choose is made from 100% grapes grown in Ontario and its unique
viticultural areas, meeting the highest standards every step of the way," said
Debbie Zimmerman, CEO of the Grape Growers of Ontario. "And, of course,
they're delicious, too."
"Our customers know Ontario VQA wines offer excellent quality and value,"
said Bob Clevely, Acting Senior Vice President of Retail Operations, LCBO.
"Now, this promotion provides our customers with another compelling reason to
choose Ontario wines - to ensure our farmland, forests and wetlands will be
here to enjoy for generations to come."
"Ontario wines are on the world stage, thanks to the skill and dedication
of our grape growers and wine makers. Today we are celebrating their success,"
said Jim Bradley, Minister responsible for the Wine Secretariat.
LCBO dollar sales of VQA wines are up 11 per cent year over year and 17
per cent in VINTAGES, the LCBO's fine wine and premium spirits business unit.
These wonderful wines, along with local food, were sampled today at a
press conference. Delicious canapés were specially created for the event by
Owen Steinberg, Executive Chef of Il Fornello with fresh, seasonal food from
the Greenbelt. Il Fornello is a leader in local food and drink; they
celebrated the first anniversary of their Ontario Menu last month.
"Greenbelt fruits, vegetables, meats and cheeses paired with Ontario VQA
wines demonstrate the greatness of Ontario terroir, expressing the rich and
varied flavours of the earth." said Owen Steinberg.
