TORONTO, Aug. 24 /CNW/ - The Canadian Red Cross is appealing for cash
donations to assist those affected by tornadoes late last week. Donations will
address unmet short-term needs that are emerging, particularly for those who
have been left homeless for what could be as long as weeks or months.
"The Red Cross has been working closely with the Region of York to assess
and address the immediate needs of those affected," said John Saunders,
provincial director of disaster management with the Red Cross. "We have also
identified that many people will require assistance beyond a few days while
insurance and the rebuilding of homes can be coordinated - our appeal fund
will help to support them during this difficult time."
Anyone affected within the Region of York who wishes to access financial
assistance should register with the Canadian Red Cross. Following that,
representatives from both the Red Cross and Region of York Social Services
will conduct a joint assessment to determine the needs of individuals and
families. Residents can register at Father Ermanno Bulfon Community Centre at
8141 Martingrove Road and the Maple Community Centre at 10190 Keele Street.
Those seeking assistance in other affected areas are advised to contact
their municipal social services department. The Red Cross is in close
communication with officials in all affected areas to identify unmet needs and
how the organization may be able to assist.
"The Canadian Red Cross is committed to helping affected Ontarians on the
road to recovery with comfort and dignity," said Saunders. "Ensuring that
their needs are met for interim housing, clothing and other basic necessities
in the coming months will be crucial."
