Red Bull Crashed Ice competitors clash to the finish line to qualify

    - Athletes skate for top 64 male and 16 female spots in Red Bull Crashed
    Ice finals -

QUEBEC CITY, Jan. 23 /CNW/ - On your mark, get set, skate! From the more
than 10,000 Canadians who applied for the chance to compete in the 2009
edition of Red Bull Crashed Ice, the playing field has been narrowed down to
just 100 top male competitors - and for the first time ever, 20 top female
competitors who will join the men in the battle to the bottom. These
high-energy athletes definitely have the need for speed - but in this race
against the clock down a 550m urban ice track through Old Quebec's steepest
streets, only the top 64 men and 16 women will make the cut. The action starts
TONIGHT at 5:30 p.m. ET.

Red Bull Crashed Ice, a combination of hockey, downhill skiing and
boardercross, has taken over the historic district of Old Quebec for the
fourth year in a row. The top 64 male and 16 female adrenaline junkies from
tonight's qualifier will advance to the Red Bull Crashed Ice championship
tomorrow night beginning at 8:30 p.m. where they will once again tackle the
epic urban ice track winding through Quebec City - this time for ultimate
victory at the finish line.

In order to crown the 2009 Red Bull Crashed Ice champs, consecutive heats
of four skaters in a double elimination bracket will narrow the field down to
a final four in each category. With the last four men and women at the
starting line, only the fastest will skate away with glory.
