VANCOUVER, July 30, 2011 /CNW/ - As an estimated 250,000 spectators gathered to enjoy the opening night of The Celebration of Light they were treated to a surprise aerobatic display by Red Bull Pilot Pete McLeod. The 27-year-old Red Lake Ontario native put on a blistering display of speed, agility and power with his modified Edge 540 aircraft. At 9pm the roar of his engine had everyone's attention as he sped into the pre-arranged safe flight zone that was kept clear of all spectators and vessels. Ten minutes and numerous gravity testing maneuvers later McLeod was on his way back to Pitt Meadows airport leaving behind nothing but a trail of racing hearts and gasps from the crowd. He was ecstatic to have been given the opportunity, "It's just amazing to be able to come to such a great Canadian city, and especially after the Olympic legacy they created. For this to be my first trip to Vancouver and also to have a first in aviation by flying in front of so many people for the Celebration of Light is just an incredible feeling and experience."

The surprise demonstration was in conjunction with the Celebration of Light, City of Vancouver, Port Metro Vancouver, Coast Guard and the Vancouver Police Department and will be repeated one additional time the evening of Wednesday August 3rd prior to Spain's Fireworks display entitled 'Odyssey'.

Before Pete McLeod stuns the crowd one last time we invite you to speak with him about the nuances of flying in such a controlled airspace, his aircraft, his history as an aviator and why the Celebration of Light flight was a milestone in his career on Wednesday August 3rd at Pitt Meadows Airport.

Truly a lifetime aviator, Pete received his first flight in the family plane at 6-weeks old over his home town of Red Lake, Ontario. By six years old he was sitting on his fathers lap at the controls. From that point on he learned to fly float and ski planes over Canada's rugged north. Now 27, McLeod qualified for his private pilot's license at 16, undergoing flight training at Harv's Air Service in Steinbach. He earned his aerobatic-instructor rating when he was 18. He started competing in Aerobatic competitions in 2004, and in his first season he went undefeated; winning the United States Regional Series Championship, and becoming the 2004 North American Collegiate Aerobatic Champion. Over the next 5 years he won numerous prestigious aerobatic events around the world before joining the Red Bull Air Race in 2009 as the youngest rookie ever. With the Red Bull Air Race on a hiatus for 2011 Pete will focus all his efforts on an extensive Air Show schedule across Canada.
