Record-breaking DVD sales expected this Tuesday



    HMV predicts release of 2007's most popular films will prompt biggest DVD
    sales date in Canadian retail history

    TORONTO, Dec. 6 /CNW/ - HMV Canada Inc., the country's leading music and
entertainment retailer, is poised for what it expects to be the highest
grossing DVD sales day in Canadian history with the release of three of the
year's most anticipated titles - The Bourne Ultimatum, Harry Potter and the
Order of the Phoenix, and High School Musical 2.
    To prepare for the hundreds of thousands of Canadians expected to flock
to its stores on December 11, HMV staff levels will be at their highest.
Bourne and Potter currently rank second- and third-highest for gross box
office sales this year while High School Musical 2 drew an audience of more
than 17 million television viewers, making it the most-watched basic cable
program ever. HMV predicts more than 500,000 purchases will be made on the
release date.
    "Historically, each of these film franchises has been a top seller for
HMV and having new instalments for all three on the same day is
unprecedented," said Ken Kirkwood, Director of Product, HMV Canada Inc. "We
predict record sales for these releases and we expect Tuesday to be the
biggest DVD sales day our industry has ever seen."
    With Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End and Superbad continuing to
fly off the shelves this week, and Tuesday's anticipated sales surge, December
is on track to becoming an exceptional success story for DVD retailers.
