"Food bank use in the GTA has increased by over 15% in the first three
months of 2009 and this has nowhere to go but up. Every day we see more and
more people finding themselves out of work and struggling to make ends meet.
This sharp increase of people facing hunger is stretching our distribution
network and placing strain on our neighbourhood food banks across the city,"
says Gail Nyberg, Executive Director of Daily Bread Food Bank.
The impact of the recession is being felt throughout the country and
communities are organizing to address the many challenges it has wrought.
Unemployment levels are rising and many people who have lost their jobs can't
collect employment insurance. In February 2009, welfare roles in Ontario
reached an eleven year high. Eviction levels are up. The numbers of homeless
are up. Pensioners are threatened with poverty. Foundations that fund
not-for-profit organizations have lost 30-40% of their investments, and
private donations to not-for-profits are down. In sum, the social safety net
we have all relied on is in tatters while more people have need of it.
We're All In This Together: Defending The Public Interest During the
Recession, a Community Forum organized by The Recession Relief Fund Coalition,
will be exploring the effects of the recession on individuals, communities and
organizations; the strategies that have been employed to address them; and
