REAPPOINTMENT TO THE SHIP-SOURCE OIL POLLUTION FUND

OTTAWA, Feb. 9 /CNW/ - The Honourable Chuck Strahl, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, today announced the reappointment of Mr. Alfred H. E. Popp of Ottawa as administrator of the Ship-Source Oil Pollution Fund for a term of two years.

"I'm pleased that Mr. Popp has agreed to continue to serve in this important role," said Minister Strahl. "His background and extensive experience in maritime law remain tremendous assets for the fund."

Mr. Popp holds a bachelor of laws from Rhodes University in Grahamstown, South Africa, and a master of laws from the University of Ottawa. He was called to the British Columbia bar in 1968 and was appointed Queen's Counsel in 1986. Until his retirement in 2005, Mr. Popp was a successful lawyer, first in private practice and later with the Government of Canada. He devoted many of these years to developing Canadian and international maritime law and has retained an active interest in these areas since his retirement. In 2006, he became the secretary treasurer of the Canadian Maritime Law Association and later that year he was elected to serve on the board of directors of the Association of Maritime Arbitrators of Canada. He continues to serve on the academic committee of the International Maritime Law Institute. Mr. Popp has served as administrator of the Ship-Source Oil Pollution Fund since January 2007.

The Ship-Source Oil Pollution Fund came into force in April 1989 through amendments to the Canada Shipping Act. The fund is liable to pay claims for oil pollution damage or anticipated damages caused by the discharge of oil from a ship at any place in Canada, or in Canadian waters, including the exclusive economic zone.
