Nine women chosen to be featured in national magazine
TORONTO, Aug. 21 /CNW/ - Dove today unveils the second issue of Shine
Magazine, a publication featuring images of real and diverse Canadian women
who have a love affair with their hair. Over 50 real Canadian women from coast
to coast can find their photograph in Shine's pages. Nine real women from
across the country participated in a professional photo shoot for the
magazine's feature story.
One such woman was Toronto-based Penny, who graced the pages of Dove's
"My hair is like me - hard to control, with a mind of it's own," laughs
Penny, a 52 year-old fine art lover, piano and viola player. "I was so happy
to be a part of this campaign given Dove's mission to try to change the
world's unfortunate and skewed perception of beauty."
Charlotte, age 34, the Shine cover model and resident of the quiet town
of Morris, MB is a stay-at-home mom with three children. "Participating in
this campaign, I learned the value in everyday people like me! Sometimes we
get stuck feeling normal and yet we are all exquisite in one way or another,"
says the redhead.
Shine Magazine shows that how a woman feels about her hair when walking
out the door in the morning affects her daily outlook and self-confidence.
None of the women featured in Shine's pages are professional models or actors,
in keeping with Dove's policy of using real women to depict real, genuine
"Shine Magazine is full of beautiful, self-confident Canadian women who
feel wonderful when their hair is just the way they like it," says Alison
Leung, Dove marketing manager. "These women know that starting their morning
with beautiful hair sets the stage for the rest of the day."
In Spring of 2008, Dove invited women across Canada to participate in an
online casting call. The only restriction was that candidates could not have
previous modelling experience. Women of all ages, all ethnicities and all hair
types submitted their favourite photos to take a shot at representing real
Canadian women and celebrating real hair.
"It was so refreshing to see how many women love their hair on a daily
basis, and that they are interested in caring for their hair in a way that
makes it shine," says Leung.
The nine women who grace the pages of the feature story come from seven
locations across Canada: Winnipeg, Guelph, Morris, Calgary, Saskatoon,
Montreal and Toronto. They range in age from 22 to 52 years old and spend
their time dedicated to their diverse careers that range from a massage
therapist, librarian, stay-at-home mom and entrepreneur. These women share
their personal tips on the pages of Shine for ensuring bad hair days are few
and far between, while juggling life in their many roles!
"These women are the ultimate ambassadors for the many inspiring and
confident women across Canada," says Leung. "None of them had ever done
anything like this before, but they got in front of the camera and it was as
if they'd been there hundreds of times."
Shine Magazine will be available with select subscription copies of
September and October issues of Transcontinental magazines, along with 50,000
copies available on newsstands with Elle Canada magazine. Alternatively, the
magazine can be viewed in its entirety at dovehair.ca as of August 27, 2008.
