RBC announces $32,000 grant to Somerset West Community Health Centre after-school program

Considered one of top after-school programs in Canada

OTTAWA, Oct. 25 /CNW/ - RBC today announced that the Somerset West
Community Health Centre is one of 77 organizations from across Canada to
receive a prestigious RBC After-School Grant for the 2007/2008 school year.
The Somerset West Community Health Centre received $32,000 to provide
educational and recreational programs to kids aged 9-12.
This is the second year the Somerset West Community Health Centre
received the RBC After-School Grant. It has now received over $70,000 from
RBC.
After-school programs across the country were chosen by advisory panels
of local citizens. Each of the community-based programs selected by the panels
receives between $10,000 and $40,000.
To be chosen for an RBC grant, after-school programs must offer
structured, supervised activities in an environment that provides what RBC has
termed "3 Ss": safety, social skills and self-esteem. The Somerset West
Community Health Centre provides a mix of academic, sports, recreational, arts
and cultural activities.
"RBC's grants are a valuable source of funding for Canada's after-school
program providers," said Desiree Rapoch, Child and Youth Community Developer
at the Somerset West Community Health Centre. "We are thrilled that these
funds will help us continue to deliver much-needed programs in our community."
"We believe that the best after-school programs can give a real boost to
the skills and knowledge children gain in a formal classroom," said Michael
Lordon, RBC Vice President, Commercial Banking for the Ottawa area. "We
congratulate the Somerset West Community Health Centre and know it will give
children a safe place to shine, and continue their learning through a wide
range of activities that go beyond academics."

Since 1999, the community-based RBC After-School Grants Program has
provided over $14.8 million toward learning and skill development
opportunities for youth in the hours after classes end for the day.
