Ratings Alert - World Juniors Gold Medal Game Delivers 4th Largest Audience in TSN History

    TORONTO, Jan. 7 /CNW/ - TSN's live coverage of Saturday's Canada vs.
Sweden gold medal game from the 2008 IIHF World Junior Championship attracted
a national average audience of 2.22 million viewers, making it the fourth
most-watched program ever on TSN. Audience levels peaked at 3.04 million
viewers at 4:06 p.m. ET just prior to the start of the overtime period in
Canada's 3-2 OT victory.
    An additional 168,000 viewers watched a prime time encore on TSN of the
gold medal game, while 526,000 viewers watched on RDS, bringing the total
television viewership to 2.8 million.
    The gold medal game becomes TSN's most-watched World Juniors telecast to
take place overseas, representing a 23 per cent increase over the previous
high set last year in Sweden (1.8M). It also ranks as the No. 2 program of the
week in Canada (Dec. 31 to Jan. 6) by a very close margin, second only to
CTV's Desperate Housewives (Jan. 6, 2.27M).
    Overall, TSN's coverage of Team Canada's seven games throughout the
tournament averaged a record-setting 950,000 viewers, making it the most
successful World Juniors to take place in Europe, surpassing the previous high
(933,000 in 2007, Sweden).
    On Friday, TSN's coverage of Canada's 4-1 win over U.S.A. in the
semifinal attracted 1.02 million viewers.
    On TSN.ca, where all of Team Canada and medal round games were shown
live, the Canada/U.S.A. semifinal on Friday afternoon attracted 173,000 unique
visitors, while Saturday's gold medal game drew 78,000 unique viewers.
    The Top 4 and eight of the Top 10 programs of all time on TSN are World
Juniors broadcasts. A total of 25 World Juniors broadcasts on TSN have now
topped more than 1 million viewers, the largest being the 2003 Gold Medal Game
in Halifax with 3.45 million viewers - the biggest audience in network
history. TSN, which has been televising the World Juniors since 1991, will
have complete coverage of next year's tourney when the World Juniors returns
to Canadian soil for the 2009 tournament in Ottawa.
