Random House Canada signs international bestselling author Joanna Trollope

TORONTO, Aug. 6 /CNW/ - Random House Canada is pleased to announce that
it has acquired Canadian rights to international bestselling author
Joanna Trollope's next two books. The first, a novel called The Piano Man,
will be published in 2010. Bruce Westwood of Westwood Creative Artists,
completed the deal.
"I am a long term fan of Joanna Trollope's fiction," says
Random House Canada publisher Anne Collins. "Her work always shows such a deep
and intelligent appreciation for the real ties that bind, and sometimes
destroy, people and for the ingenuity that men and women sometimes have to
bring just getting through the day. I never know what new wrinkle of
contemporary life is going to catch her marvelous eye; she always surprises
and never disappoints. I'm delighted that Random House Canada is now her
Canadian publisher.
In The Piano Man, Joanna Trollope looks at the effect of a sudden death
on the families of the piano man of the title. He is a Tony Bennett-style
crooner who, at the peak of his success in his forties, meets a younger,
sharper woman who persuades him that she can take his career to new heights in
London. As a result, the piano man abandons his first wife and son to move
south and start a new life and a new family. It is at his funeral that his two
families first come together.
Joanna Trollope has been writing for over thirty years; she first wrote a
number of historical novels now published under Caroline Harvey, then
Britannia's Daughters - a study of women in the British Empire and more
recently, her enormously successful contemporary works of fiction, several of
which have been adapted for television. These include the number one
bestseller The Rector's Wife, The Men and the Girls, A Spanish Lover, The Best
of Friends, Other People's Children, Marrying the Mistress and, most recently
Friday Nights. Joanna Trollope was appointed the OBE in the 1996
Queen's Birthday Honours List for services to literature and joined the
Advisory Board of the Costa Awards in 2008, having chaired the Judging Panel
for the 2008 Awards.
