/R E P E A T/ - Media Invitation - Polytechnique unveils solution to knee-joint problems stemming from research led by Professor Michael D. Buschmann

    MONTREAL, April 24 /CNW Telbec/ - Media representatives are invited to
attend the inauguration ceremony for the NSERC/BioSyntech Industrial Research
Chair in Hybrid Biomaterials for Innovative Regenerative Technologies, to be
held this Thursday, April 26, at Ecole Polytechnique. The Chair will enable
Professor Michael D. Buschmann and his team to continue their work on the
development of hybrid biomaterials with ultra-high-performance therapeutic
properties, with applications that include repair of joint cartilage.
    The biomaterials developed by Professor Buschmann include CarGel(TM), now
commercialized and produced by the Chair's industrial partner, BioSyntech.
This gel links chitosan (derived from the shells of crustaceans) and blood,
and when applied to damaged joints, allows the body's cells to "grow" new
cartilage. The first Canadian to benefit from the novel procedure was former
Montréal Canadiens star defenceman Serge Savard. Without it, he would have
required major surgery to completely replace his left knee joint.

    In attendance:

    Professor Michael D. Buschmann, holder of the new Chair and Director,
    Biomedical Science and Technologies Research Group;
    Dr. Nicolas Duval, the surgeon who carried out the operation on Serge
    Savard using CarGelTM;
    Claude LeDuc, President and Chief Executive Officer, BioSyntech;
    Amine Selmani, Founder of BioSyntech and Member of its Board of
    Directors;
    Krystyna Miedzybrodzka, Director, Bio-Industries Division, Research
    Partnerships Programs Directorate, NSERC;
    Robert L. Papineau, Director General, Ecole Polytechnique.
