/R E P E A T/ - Media invitation - 9th Quebec Police Awards gala Dec. 6th

MONTREAL, Dec. 3 /CNW Telbec/ - Members of the media are invited to
attend the 9th annual Quebec Police Awards gala on December 6, as 30 police
officers from across the province will be honoured for acts of courage and
dedication to law enforcement. The gala is organized by the province's top
police unions and associations. The organizing police associations will also
present an honorary award to the Canadian Coalition For Gun Control, and
reiterate their support for the current firearms registry and sustained gun
control initiatives. The awards gala is being held on the 18th anniversary of
the Ecole Polytechnique tragedy.
The gala is organized by the Quebec Mounted Police Members' Association,
the Association des policières et policiers provinciaux du Québec, the
Fédération des policiers et policières municipaux du Québec and the Fraternité
des policiers et policières de Montréal. The 30 police officers honoured
include members of the RCMP, the Sûreté du Québec, and Montreal, Quebec City
and Saguenay police services, as well as the Régie intermunicipale de police
de Roussillon.
In marking the anniversary of the Ecole Polytechnique tragedy, in which
14 young women were killed by a man armed with a high-powered assault weapon,
the province's police unions and associations will be expressing their support
for the current gun registry legislation at a time when the government of
Canada has introduced a bill that amends the Criminal Code and the Firearms
Act to repeal the requirement to obtain a registration certificate for long
arms (rifles and shotguns).
During the gala, awards of distinction will also be presented to four
individuals who have played a major role in building the police union movement
in Quebec.
Guests from the union, police, business and legal community, as well as
municipal, provincial and federal personalities, will attend the gala.
