It is an honour and a privilege for the Canadian Club of Montreal to
welcome Mr. Yves Fortier to its podium.
The honour is all the greater when we consider the career of this man
whose achievements leave us in awe, and our sense of privilege is likewise
heightened when we realize just how busy he is.
He can be found in courts of law in Paris, London, the Hague, Lausanne
and Washington; the cases he pleads involve distant countries such as the
United Kingdom, Ireland, Qatar, Bahrain and Equatorial Guinea. He sits on
boards of directors across Canada.
Mr. Fortier was recently named the world's top arbitrator by The American
Lawyer/Focus Europe. He was awarded this distinction based on surveys
conducted among a wide range of law firms worldwide between January 2003 and
His experience as an Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the
United Nations, where he was Canada's Chief Delegate to the United Nations
General Assembly (1988-92) and to the Security Council (1989-90), make him the
ideal person to speak to the Club on his chosen topic.
