/R E P E A T -- Solar Plant Invades Prime Farmland in Eastern Ontario/

ST. EUGENE, ON, Feb. 6 /CNW/ - Agricultural leaders and local residents
will be joined by community representatives including the Warden of United
Counties of Prescott and Russell and Representatives of the Ontario Federation
of Agriculture (OFA) at a press conference to be held on February 9, 2009 at
12:15 PM at 2270 County Road 10 St. Eugene, ON to denounce a private company
planning to transform 300 acres of prime farmland, right in the center of 5
large dairy farms, as well as many residences, into an industrial solar plant.
"We are not opposed in any way to renewable energy, but there are more
appropriate places to put these solar panels such as rooftops or on marginal
lands" says Shawn Wylie, co-organizer of the press conference and one of the
dairy farmers neighboring the 300-acres in question. There are many other
projects like this one (across Ontario) that have people talking and worried.
Through the Provincial Policy Statement, the Ontario Government is essentially
prioritizing energy wants over the needs of agriculture, food and citizens -
farming communities and their health are being threatened by lack of proper
planning and vision.
