Ottawa Police Service Marine Patrol Unit will recover harmful debris and
    litter in the Rideau Canal

    OTTAWA, Sept. 17 /CNW/ -

WHAT: To help kick off the 15th annual TD Great Canadian Shoreline
Cleanup, the Ottawa Police Service Marine Patrol Unit will dive at
the base of Parliament Hill to recover harmful debris and aquatic
litter. Previous Ottawa dives have recovered discarded fireworks,
coconuts and shopping carts. What will this year's dive uncover?

    WHEN: Thursday, September 18, 2008 9:00 a.m. - Recommended arrival time
           9:15 - 9:45 a.m. - Ottawa Police Service Marine Patrol Unit dive
at the base of Parliament Hill and reveal recovered litter
           (*)9:00 - 11:00 a.m. - Spokespeople available for interviews

WHERE: Base of Parliament Hill where the Rideau Canal meets the Ottawa
           River (near the Locks)

WHO: Matthew Fortier, Regional Manager, TD Friends of the Environment
           Foundation
Eric Solomon, Vice President of Conservation, Research and
           Education, Vancouver Aquarium

WHY: Every year over one million seabirds and 100,000 marine mammals
and turtles die through entanglement and ingestion of litter, and
it's estimated that 80 per cent of this litter originates from
land based sources. This year, over 60,000 Canadians will work
together from September 20 to 28 to remove nearly 100 tonnes of
litter from our shorelines and waterways during the 15th annual TD
           Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup.

To help clean the city's shorelines, Ottawa residents are
encouraged to drop by Mooney's Bay on Saturday, September 20 at
9:00 a.m. or the Ottawa River at Britannia Beach South on Sunday,
           September 21 at 10:00 a.m.
