Deep dive will recover harmful debris and litter off Point Pleasant Park

    HALIFAX, Sept. 17 /CNW/ -

WHAT: To help kick off the 15th annual TD Great Canadian Shoreline
Cleanup, the Halifax Navy Fleet Diving Unit will dive into the
Halifax Harbour to recover harmful debris and aquatic litter.
Previous Halifax dives have recovered a highway sign, car parts
and a Vaseline bottle. What will this year's dive uncover?

    WHEN: Thursday, September 18, 2008
           9:00 a.m. - Recommended arrival time
           9:15 - 9:45 a.m. - Halifax Navy Fleet Diving Unit dive into
Halifax Harbour and reveal recovered litter
           (*)9:00 - 11:00 a.m. - Spokespeople available for interviews

    WHERE: Halifax Harbour
The Point Pleasant Park parking lot near the sea terminals

WHO: Todd Dickey, Coordinator, TD Friends of the Environment Foundation
           Mike McDermid, Spokesperson, Vancouver Aquarium
           Stacey McCarthy, Communications Specialist, WWF-Canada

WHY: Every year over one million seabirds and 100,000 marine mammals
and turtles die through entanglement and ingestion of litter, and
it's estimated that 80 per cent of this litter originates from
land based sources. This year, over 60,000 Canadians will work
together from September 20 to 28 to remove nearly 100 tonnes of
litter from our shorelines and waterways during the 15th annual TD
           Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup.

Halifax citizens are encouraged to drop by the September 20th
           Kick-off Event between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. at Point Pleasant
Park (Black Rock Beach) to help clean the city's shoreline.
