/R E P E A T -- Media Advisory - Relief for Cyclone Survivors Continues in Myanmar/

Threats to children's wellbeing remain three months after storm

Andrew Kirkwood, Save the Children Myanmar Country Director, discusses
humanitarian efforts three months after Cyclone Nargis in an audio press
    briefing at 9:30 a.m. EST, Wednesday, July 30, 2008

TORONTO, July 28 /CNW/ - Cyclone Nargis swept into Myanmar on May 2
and 3, 2008, displacing nearly 1 million people and killing more than
80,000 people. Save the Children, which had more than 500 staff working in
Myanmar before the storm, was able to respond immediately in some of the
worst-hit areas near Yangon and in the Irrawaddy Delta.
To date, Save the Children has provided lifesaving assistance - including
food, water, oral-rehydration salts, shelter materials and medical services -
to more than half a million people affected by Cyclone Nargis. The agency has
more than 780 staff and volunteers assisting children and families affected by
the storm.
While the majority of cyclone survivors have received some assistance,
families are entering the difficult "hungry season" - the time between
planting and harvest. Meanwhile, the storm devastated the agriculture and
fishing industries in the delta, flooding paddy fields and destroying boats
and fishing equipment - which is hampering parents' ability to feed their
children.
Andrew Kirkwood will discuss these and other issues facing cyclone
survivors as they work to rebuild their lives. A question-and-answer session
will follow Mr. Kirkwood's remarks.
