Canadians believe it's our friendly, polite ways that make us
sparkle on the world stage
TORONTO, June 25 /CNW/ - As Canadians prepare to fire up the barbecue and
light sparklers with family and friends to celebrate Canada Day, one in five
of us (19 per cent)(1) wish we could invite Canadian comedian/actor Mike Myers
to sparkle at a backyard gathering. And according to Canadians, those
gathering will be friendly and polite because that's how we see ourselves as a

questioned Canadians on their views regarding sparkling Canadian
personalities, as well as how Canadians see themselves on the world stage. The
term sparkling was defined as "brilliance, liveliness or vivaciousness
represented in attitude, character or achievements."
Party with the sparkling stars...
Just behind Myers were Wayne Gretzky (17 per cent), Celine Dion
(15 per cent) and Shania Twain (13 per cent) as famous Canadians that we would
most like to invite over for summer backyard entertaining.
"Dole Sparklers is all about releasing your inner sparkle and we think
Canada Day is the perfect time to do just that with street parties, barbeques

Canadians say they add fun and sparkle to their summer entertaining by

mix of music (52 per cent).

The poll also asked Canadians to identify who they feel is the most
"sparkling" Canadian of all time. Pierre Elliott Trudeau (16 per cent) was the
number one pick, followed by Celine Dion (10 per cent) and Wayne Gretzky
(4 per cent).
Media personalities who sparkle...Rick Mercer and Don Cherry!
When asked to choose from a list of 10 Canadian media personalities who
they think most sparkles, respondents chose funny-guy Rick Mercer
(19 per cent) as the top media personality. Hockey commentator Don Cherry was
the second pick with 16 per cent of the vote. Rounding out the top five are
Lloyd Robertson (11 per cent), Peter Mansbridge (10 per cent) and
George Stroumboulopoulos (9 per cent).
How we view ourselves as Canadians...
Canadians believe it's our friendliness (28 per cent) and politeness
(25 per cent) that above all else give us our sparkling positive image around
the world. Other qualities that we see in ourselves as a people are humour (14
per cent) and being down to earth (10 per cent).
