WINNIPEG, Jan. 7 /CNW/ - Winnipeg dermatologists are inviting members of
the public to a skin cancer screening event at Polo Park Shopping Centre's
Community Centre, Winnipeg, on Monday January 12, 2009, from 10 am to 1 pm.
The event, hosted by the Canadian Dermatology Association (CDA), aims to
raise awareness about the need for early detection of this disease. Timely
treatment can lessen disfigurement caused and even prevent death in the case
of melanoma skin cancer.
"Over half of all skin cancers are identified by people themselves, their
partners or close family members, so knowing what to look for is crucial,"
says Dr. Marnie Wiseman, Winnipeg dermatologist and regional director for the
CDA's Sun Awareness Program.
Those worried about spots or moles on their skin, or who have had a lot
of sun exposure through outdoor work or recreational activities, are
encouraged to come down for a private screening. Screening capacity will be
limited. Skin cancer awareness materials will be available until 3pm.
