Québec unveils its mineral strategy - ENVISIONING A RESPONSIBLE FUTURE FOR QUEBEC'S MINERAL DEVELOPMENT

QUEBEC, June 29 /CNW Telbec/ - Serge Simard, Minister for Natural
Resources and Wildlife and Minister Responsible for the
Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean Region and the Côte-Nord Region, today unveiled
Québec's first-ever mineral strategy: Preparing the Future of Québec's Mineral
Sector.
"This strategy will make the Québec mining industry an example of
sustainable development that creates wealth, furthers social progress, and
respects the environment. It falls within the scope of our government's
actions to develop a new economic space, particularly for the opening up of
Québec's North. We are looking to local and aboriginal communities to take
part in the development of the sector and reap the benefits of mining,"
declared Simard.
Despite the current economic slowdown, the mineral sector remains an
important engine of economic growth for Québec and its regions. This strategy
also aims to ensure that Quebecers receive their fair share of the benefits of
mineral resource exploitation.
Québec's mineral strategy, Preparing the Future of Québec's Mineral
Sector, is built around three main policy directions:

    - Creating wealth and preparing the future of Québec's mineral sector
    - Ensuring environment-friendly mineral development
    - Fostering integrated, community-related mineral development

These guidelines also constitute an initial response to the Auditor
General of Québec's recommendations regarding the mineral sector. Other
actions are soon to follow as we pursue the goals envisaged by these
recommendations.
"Québec has tremendous mining sector development potential, and the
challenges to be faced are also tremendous. With this first mineral strategy,
Québec has taken the initiative-putting forward solutions, new social and
environmental requirements, and critical steps to prepare the future of the
mineral sector. This strategy will make Québec a model for others and allow us
to remain at the forefront of this industry. The mineral sector has made a
major contribution to our history; its contribution to our future will be even
more positive," concluded the minister.
