Quebec brewers launch "Bring your own beer" campaign

62% of Quebeckers don't know or don't believe they can bring beer
    to "bring your own" restaurants

MONTREAL, June 11 /CNW Telbec/ - Beer may be Quebeckers' preferred
alcoholic beverage, according to Statistics Canada, but most are reluctant to
bring beer to the 877 restaurants in Quebec that have the required permit.
Why? Because 41% of Quebeckers simply believe that they can't bring any beer,
while 21% don't know they can.
In light of the results of a survey conducted by CROP for the Quebec
Brewers Association (QBA), the industry group has decided to launch a "Bring
your own beer" campaign. "Many people enjoy a beer as an aperitif or with
certain meals. However, 67% of respondents told us that they rarely or never
bring beer along when they go to a restaurant that has the appropriate
permit," said Alain Madgin, President and Chief Executive Officer of the QBA.
One-third of survey respondents said that they had brought beer to this type
of a restaurant in the past 12 months.
In order to let Quebeckers know that they are allowed to bring beer to
these restaurants, restaurant owners and operators have been invited to
display a "Bring your own beer" logo at the entrance to their establishment.
"The logo doesn't show any particular brand. It's simply a reminder that
restaurant owners are happy to welcome their customers who prefer to drink
beer," said Mr. Madgin.
Among people who patronize this type of restaurant and who weren't aware
that they could bring beer, about one in four people (26%) would bring beer
regularly or occasionally knowing that it is allowed. "It's an interesting
piece of data when we consider that people are generally in the habit of
bringing wine to this type of restaurant," concluded Mr. Madgin.

    About the survey

The survey of 1,000 adult Quebeckers was conducted by CROP between May 15
and 26, 2008. The margin of error is 3%, 19 times out of 20.
