VALCARTIER GARRISON, QC, Jan. 23 /CNW Telbec/ - Approximately 250
Canadian Forces members from the 12e Régiment blindé du Canada will
participate in an exercise in La Tuque, in the Mauricie region, from January
26 to 31, 2009. They will practise carrying out various winter manoeuvres and
giving support to the civil authorities.
Once on site, the CF members will take part in a number of scenarios,
notably involving navigation, reconnaissance patrols and cold-weather
survival. About 30 wheeled vehicles of various types and 10 snowmobiles will
be used to transport the troops.
Although the scenarios do not include manoeuvres with weapons or
ammunition, pyrotechnics such as small flares could be used. Most of the
activities will take place in the forest or on private land that we have
received permission to use. As a result, the residents will not see our
members very often.
This type of training is necessary to prepare CF members for domestic
operations (in Canada) in all types of weather, including winter conditions
such as the ice storm in 1998.
An open-house day will be held to thank the residents of La Tuque for
their hospitality. During this open house, residents will be able to get a
look at the vehicles and equipment used by our members and obtain information
about the techniques taught in the Canadian Forces.
