Public service announcement - Cannon firing at the Citadel - Tradition to be revived temporarily for 400th anniversary

VALCARTIER GARRISON, QC, June 20 /CNW Telbec/ - The firing of the cannon
at the Citadel, an abandoned tradition that once signalled angelus noon
prayers and evening curfew, will resume temporarily on Tuesday, June 24, 2008,
to highlight Quebec City's 400th anniversary.
Between June 24 and September 1, 2008, Quebec City and South Shore
residents and tourists will be able to hear a cannon at the Citadel being
fired at 12:00 pm and 9:30 pm.
The exact origins of this tradition are difficult to trace, but for many
years after Quebec City was founded, the sound of the cannon gave rhythm to
local life in this garrison city with a rich military history.
