Public Nominations Solicited for Rural Awards

EDMONTON, Feb. 29 /CNW/ - Rural communities that successfully employ
innovative strategies to recruit and retain physicians in their area can now
be nominated for a 2008 provincial award recognizing their achievements.
The Alberta Rural Physician Action Plan (RPAP) and the Alberta Chambers
of Commerce today announced that nominations for the 2008 Rural Community
Recruitment and Retention Award will be received until 5:00 p.m., 31 March
2008.
This award annually recognizes a rural Alberta community that has best
developed innovative and collaborative approaches and solutions resulting in
successful physician recruitment and retention in their area. Communities can
nominate themselves or be nominated by others. The Award will be presented to
the recipient community at the Alberta Chambers of Commerce Annual General
Meeting in May in Fort Saskatchewan. For full details about the Award and
nomination information, go to www.rpap.ab.ca or www.abchamber.ca.
Recruiting and retaining physicians in many rural communities is an
ongoing challenge. Rural communities can play an important role in co-managing
their local physician resources by understanding the unique challenges facing
physicians, creating physician-friendly environments and by participating more
fully in recruiting and retaining physicians.

Besides the community award, RPAP is also soliciting public nominations in
March for two physician awards:

    - The Early Careerist Award recognizes the significant contributions of
a rural physician within their first twelve years of practice who is
innovative, energetic and passionate about rural medicine and the
        rural lifestyle; and

    - The Award of Distinction recognizes a physician who presently lives
and works in rural Alberta and has done so for more than twelve
years, and who demonstrates a superior commitment and contribution to
their community through medical practice, teaching, research and/or
        community service.

The deadline for nomination on these awards is also 5:00 p.m, 31 March
2008. Information for all three awards can be found on the RPAP website at
www.rpap.ab.ca under What's New.

The Alberta Rural Physician Action Plan (RPAP) is an independent
not-for-profit organization funded by Alberta Health and Wellness. The RPAP
provides a provincially-focused comprehensive, integrated and sustained
program for the education, recruitment and retention of physicians for rural
practice.

The Alberta Chambers of Commerce (ACC) is a federation of 127 Chambers of
Commerce in Alberta and which in turn represent over 22,000 businesses. The
ACC ensures its members' business interests are improved through the
development and advocacy of policy to the provincial and federal governments
and assisting members to expand their business potential through efforts to
achieve the lowest possible tax and regulatory environment.
