Public Education in Ontario Facts & Figures

TORONTO, Sept. 20 /CNW/ - As the upcoming leaders debate approaches, we
are sending you the following factual information about public education in
Ontario that we hope you find useful.

    Public Education

In Ontario, the term "public education" refers to a system that already
includes a diverse array of schools. Among them are:

    - Faith-based Catholic schools teaching more than 650,000 students,
representing one-third of students in public education
    - Eden High School in St. Catharines - a Christian Secondary School
within the Niagara District School Board
    - Burkevale Protestant Separate School - the only school belonging to
        the Penetanguishene Protestant School Board

Public education in Ontario does not signify a secular school system.

    Other Faith-Based Schools

Approximately 53,000 students attend other faith-based schools that are
not part of public education in Ontario (which includes faith-based Catholic
schools). They represent just over 2% of students within the public education
system.

    The Catholic Position

The Ontario Conference of Catholic Bishops supports fairness in
education. The OCCB recently articulated its position by saying, in part: "the
public funding of Catholic Schools recognizes that parents have the right to
make educational choices for their children, and that the state should assist
them."

    Other Provinces

Five other provinces - Quebec, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, British
Columbia - and the Northwest Territories provide support to a variety of
faith-based schools (details available upon request) while maintaining strong
public school systems. In fact, a recent article in the Economist (article
available) cited the excellence of public education in Alberta, particularly
in Edmonton where faith-based schools are part of the public school board.
