OTTAWA, Dec. 7 /CNW Telbec/ - The Public Service Alliance of Canada
(PSAC) in the National Capital Region will distribute five awards to as many
people who have particularly stood out in defending human rights regionally.
The Human Rights Action Award shall be given to the person who has made a
substantial contribution to one of the equity groups designated by the union
(women, Aboriginals, gays and lesbians, racially visible persons or persons
with disabilities). The Federal Public Service Award will go to the person in
the Government of Canada who has overcome obstacles or taken exceptional steps
to achieve greater inclusion and fairness in the treatment of members in the
The following two awards are in recognition of commitment and leadership
in the area of equality and social justice: the Community Award shall be given
to a volunteer with a community organization while the PSAC Award will go to a
member or employee of PSAC.
Finally, the Philippe-Célestin Award will be attributed to a PSAC member
who has been actively engaged with the PSAC for over 10 years regionally in
racially visible issues.
These awards will be handed out at a ceremony to take place on Sunday,
December 9, 2007 from 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at PSAC Head Office at 233 Gilmour

According to PSAC Equity Committees, which are responsible for the
organization, these awards were created because it is important to recognize
the exceptional contribution of persons for whom the defence of human rights
is essential. They deserve the appreciation, admiration and gratitude of
everyone who believes in a fairer, more equitable, more integrated and more
diversified society and who fights for a society that is respectful and
accommodating of the differences of all persons.
