Province-wide program initiated at Brock University supports National Non-Smoking Week

    TORONTO, Jan. 15 /CNW/ - Twenty-five per cent of Ontario's young adults
aged 20 to 24 smoke cigarettes - the highest smoking prevalence of any age
group in the province.
The province-wide Leave The Pack Behind program, which was initiated at
Brock University in 2000, provides smoking awareness campaigns and cessation
services to post-secondary students on 43 university and college campuses in
Ontario.
For National Non-Smoking Week, which runs from Sunday, Jan. 18 to
Saturday, Jan. 24, Leave The Pack Behind's student teams will host a variety
of campaigns aimed at reducing tobacco use among young adults at Ontario
post-secondary institutions.
Leave The Pack Behind kicks off its annual "Let's Make A Deal!" contest
during National Non-Smoking Week. The contest motivates smokers to cut back or
quit, and encourages non-smokers to stay smoke free. The week also coincides
with Leave The Pack Behind's Smoke Free Campus Day. This daylong event hosted
by many campuses supports the improvement of campus smoking policies.
Campus health professionals are also on hand to support National
Non-Smoking Week by offering cessation counseling and aides to members of
campus communities.
Leave The Pack Behind's comprehensive tobacco control programming targets
590,000 students across the province - this represents more than 133,000
smokers. The program offers students effective smoking cessation support
throughout the school year. Student teams host weekly outreach activities.
More than 40,000 annual visitors access www.LeaveThePackBehind.org for
information, tips and the interactive quit program, "eSmoke/Quit."
Funded by the Government of Ontario's Ministry of Health Promotion, Leave
The Pack Behind is a comprehensive age-tailored tobacco control initiative for
young adults on post-secondary campuses in Ontario. Leave The Pack Behind
students work with health professionals and campus administrations to create
an atmosphere that promotes healthy choices about smoking and eliminates
exposure to second-hand smoke.
