Province Supports Water Protection And Land-Use Planning

Digital Maps Of Southern Ontario Now Available

TORONTO, Nov. 14 /CNW/ - The Ontario government is helping to protect
source water and promote informed land-use planning in southern Ontario
through the release of earth science data in a new, high-quality format,
Northern Development and Mines Minister Michael Gravelle announced today.
"Geoscience information, such as that compiled and published by our
government's Ontario Geological Survey (OGS), provides a fundamental picture
of the Earth's surface," said Gravelle. "This information is crucial when
deciding what areas to protect and how to develop our resources in a
sustainable manner."
Using geographic information system technology, the OGS recently released
a digital version of a widely used series of maps entitled Physiography of
Southern Ontario. This information is an easily understood study of the
physical structure and geology of the Great Lakes area. While invaluable for
source water protection initiatives underway across Ontario, the maps can also
be used by engineers, scientists, students and teachers for studies ranging
from ecological atlases to geotechnical investigations.
This data release is one of several ongoing OGS projects that investigate
Ontario's geology and land base. The geoscience data and products produced by
the OGS are used for a wide range of applications including environmental,
land-use planning and resource assessments. Products are available for
