Largest crowd ever at Harry's Spring Run-Off raises $320,000 for Princess
TORONTO, April 4 /CNW/ - Over 4,600 people, wearing everything from
shorts to business suits, braved the cold wind this morning while
participating in the fourth annual Harry's Spring Run-Off 8K & 5K to fight
prostate cancer. The resulting $320,000 raised from the event will be used to
continue groundbreaking research being done at Princess Margaret Hospital's
internationally recognized Prostate Centre.
"We are so thankful to all the runners, walkers and donors who
participated today and we accept this gift with great appreciation," stated
Dr. Rob Bristow, Senior Scientist, Ontario Cancer Institute and GU Radiation
Oncologist, Princess Margaret Hospital, on behalf of the Princess Margaret
Hospital. "Harry's Spring Run-Off has been a wonderful vehicle, not only for
much-needed fundraising that allows us to continue with our research for a
cure, but also in raising the profile of this disease."
"I'm thrilled with the tremendous turn-out this morning - our largest to
date - and the impressive dollars that have been raised," said Larry Rosen,
CEO & Chairman of Harry Rosen Inc., who led Harry Rosen's team of 60
associates in the event. "I'd like to express my sincere thanks to all the
dedicated survivors, participants, volunteers, sponsors and fundraisers who
helped make today's sold-out Harry's Spring Run-Off the best yet."
The 8K competitive run, one of Toronto's earliest and most celebrated
Runs, had participation from many elite level athletes. John Brown of
Victoria, BC, who also won Harry's Spring Run-Off in Vancouver in March, took
first place with a time of 24:11. Lucy Njeri of Kenya was the first female
finisher for the second year in a row, with a time of 29:48. Thousands more
took part in the 5K walk and run.
Corporations such as HSBC Bank Canada, Hugo Boss Canada, Coppley Apparel
Group all entered corporate teams, with Toronto Track winning the title of
Fastest Team (winning a prize of Harry Rosen gift cards for their success).
Other awards were given out for finishers in various age categories, while
Toronto's Kelly Smith and Maggie Bennedsen, clad in matching wigs and
moustaches, were awarded the prize for "Best Dressed Runners." Prizes will be
handed out in the coming weeks for Top Individual Fundraiser and Top Team
Fundraisers, once the final audited fundraising results have been tallied.
In addition to title sponsor, Harry Rosen Inc., funding for the event was
generously provided by fourth time presenting sponsor HSBC Bank Canada; key
sponsors Coppley Apparel Group and New Balance Toronto; and media sponsors The
Globe and Mail and CBS Outdoor.
