QUEBEC CITY, March 25 /CNW Telbec/ - The Chief Electoral Officer of
Québec, Me Marcel Blanchet, is inviting over 5 millions electors to exercise
their voting rights during the general elections that will take place
tomorrow. From 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., 21,466 polling stations will be open and
over 100,000 election officers will administer the elections during which
679 candidates will be vying for the votes of the electorate.
"The general election is one of the key activities of our democratic
life," explained Me Blanchet, "and after an election campaign during which the
various candidates tried to woo electors, it is now the turn of electors to
have their say." The Chief Electoral Officer would like to confirm that
efforts made over the past 10 days to recruit election officers have had the
desired effect and everything is now set to receive electors throughout the
Receiving Electors and Exercising the Right to Vote
Electors can consult the reminder card that they received in the mail to
know where they have to vote. Employers also have to give electors four
consecutive hours to exercise their right to vote. The Election Act also
states that educational institutions have to grant leave to students and
pupils who are electors while school boards have to grant leave to all their
students and pupils on polling day.
To vote, every elector must establish his identity after providing his
name and address to the deputy returning officer. For this purpose, he can
present one of the following documents: health insurance card, driver's
license, Canadian passport, certificate of Indian Status or Canadian Forces
identification card. This formality will help to confirm the elector's
identity using the photograph on the identification document.
Release of Results
Electors and media representatives can obtain the election results by
clicking "Preliminary Results" on the home page of the Chief Electoral
Officer's Website at www.electionsquebec.qc.ca. The various pages will be
updated regularly until all the votes are counted.
Media representatives can also obtain figures on participation rates at
11:30 a.m., 2:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. These approximate rates should be known
shortly after they are recorded in the 125 electoral divisions and they will
be available on the home page of the Chief Electoral Officer's Website.
The compilation of lists of electors after the revision period reveals
that the final number of electors for tomorrow's election is 5,630,567. This
total includes 11,539 electors outside Québec and 2,835 electors who are
inmates. More than 132,000 changes were made to the list of electors during
the revision and the special revision, with the following breakdown: about
64,000 new entries were made, 61,000 entries were struck off and
6,600 corrections were made.
The final number of electors who voted in the advance poll is 573,647.
This figure includes persons who voted in their domiciles and in residential
facilities, for a final participation rate of 10.23 % in the advance poll.
