QUEBEC CITY, March 20 /CNW Telbec/ - The Chief Electoral Officer, Me
Marcel Blanchet, would like to announce that during the advance poll held on
March 18th and 19th, 564,409 electors exercised their voting rights. This
figure represents 10.06% of the number of electors entered on the list of
electors before the special revision.
By comparison, official data for the general elections of April 14, 2003
show that 5.56% of electors exercised their right to vote in the advance poll.
"Although the advance poll is in no way an indicator of the final turnout
on polling day," explains to Me Blanchet, "we noticed that a large number of
electors have already exercised their voting right; this is an encouraging
The Québec City region had the highest participation rates in the advance
poll, with the electoral divisions of Jean-Talon (17.05%), Louis-Hébert
(16.98%), Charlesbourg (16.47%), Lévis (15.73%), La Peltrie (15.69%) and
Jean-Lesage (15.41%) leading the way.
Complete figures for the advance poll will be known by the end of the
week after the compilation of figures for voting in residential facilities
which ends today and for domiciliary voting, which ends on Thursday the 22nd.
It is worth noting that pursuant to the new provisions in the Election
Act, the opening hours of advance polling stations were extended and voting in
the advance poll was no longer reserved for certain categories of electors.
The counting of ballots cast in the advance poll will take place on the
evening of polling day, i.e., March 26th, in each of the 125 electoral
divisions in Québec.
