Press Release no 18 - 680 CANDIDATES WILL BE RUNNING IN THE UPCOMING GENERAL ELECTIONS



    QUEBEC CITY, March 10 /CNW Telbec/ - In view of the general elections of
March 26, 2007, the Chief Electoral Officer of Québec, Me Marcel Blanchet,
would like to announce that after the period for the filing of nomination
papers that ended today at 2 p.m., 680 nomination papers were accepted from
the 125 electoral divisions in Québec, compared to 646 in the 2003 general
elections. The figure of 680 equals the record set in the general elections of
September 12, 1994.
    The number of nomination papers accepted is distributed as follows:

    It is worth noting that both independent candidates and candidates with
no political affiliation do not belong to any political party. The difference
between these two categories of candidates, however, is that on the ballot,
the name of the former is followed by the term "independent" while the names
of candidates with no political affiliation has no term associated with it.
    Furthermore, all electoral divisions do not have the same number of
candidates. The table below shows the number of electoral divisions that have
between 4 and 9 candidates (the electoral division of Verdun is the only one
with 9 candidates).
