TORONTO, June 1 /CNW/ - The Association for the Reform of the Toronto
Humane Society (ART) calls on Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) and the Office of
the Public Guardian and Trustee of Ontario (OPGT) to immediately initiate
investigations into allegations of mismanagement and animal neglect and abuse
at the Toronto Humane Society (THS).
As well, ART requests that OPGT consider freezing THS' financial assets
pending the outcome of the appropriate investigations into the allegations of
financial mismanagement which include the initiation of frivolous lawsuits
against individuals and organizations that in the past have been critical of
the THS. "The THS has proven itself to be litigious in the past," explains ART
spokesperson, Toronto lawyer Arie Gaertner of Miller, Canfield, Paddock &
Stone, LLP, "and we don't want to see money donated to care for animals in
need squandered on lawsuits."
ART has compiled an extensive dossier which it submitted to the CRA in
August, 2008 and to the OPGT in January, 2009. ART has requested the CRA to
perform a forensic audit and has filed an official complaint with OPGT.
We call on both agencies to act immediately and address the untenable
situation at the THS. The animals and countless donors of the THS are
depending on you.
