President and Chief Executive Officer of De Beers Canada, Mr. Jim Gowans elected Chair of the Mining Association of Canada



    VANCOUVER, June 18 /CNW Telbec/ - The Mining Association of Canada (MAC)
is pleased to announce the election of Jim Gowans, as Chair of the
Association. Mr. Gowans is President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of
De Beers Canada Inc. He replaces Peter R. Jones, past President and Chief
Executive Officer, HudBay Minerals Inc, who has completed his two-year term.
    Mr. Gowans has been an active member of the MAC Board and a key member of
the MAC Towards Sustainable Mining (TSM) Governance Team. TSM is a stewardship
initiative that aims to sustain the industry's role as a leading economic
player by increasing public trust in its ability to manage the environmental
and social issues important to Canadians. TSM encompasses environmental
management and stakeholder inclusion practices that will help the industry
earn its social license to operate. Mr. Gowans also serves as a
MAC representative on the TSM Community of Interest Panel.
    With over thirty years of practical management experience, touching on
most aspects of the mining industry, including exploration, major projects,
operations and human resources, Mr. Gowans has held senior management
positions with PT Inco Indonesia, Placer Dome, and Teck Cominco. In his
current role, Mr. Gowans looks forward to leading De Beers Canada through the
transition to full production and the exploration of new kimberlite deposits
in Canada.
    Mr. Gowans earned his Bachelor of Applied Science in Mineral Engineering
(Mining and Mineral Processing) from the University of British Columbia in
1974.

    Other elections to the MAC Board include:

    - Douglas Horswill, Teck Cominco Limited as First Vice-Chair
    - Terence Bowles, Iron Ore Company of Canada as Second Vice-Chair

    Gordon Peeling is President and Chief Executive Officer of the
Association and Secretary to the Board.

    Based in Ottawa, MAC is the national organization for the Canadian mining
industry. Its members are engaged in mineral exploration, mining, smelting,
refining and semi-fabrication.
